Settler’s Beans

settlerbeansSettler’s Beans

Settler’s beans is a hearty dish similar to baked beans. The taste is slightly different. sometimes, I will make a pan of these or just throw it in a crock pot and make cornbread, and that will be our supper. In a potluck or stand alone, thee beans are a treat.  The recipe I have for this is fairly old and calls for molasses. Molasses is not a staple in my pantry and I hate buying a jug of something I am going to use 2 tablespoons of. So, I have discovered you can use 2 tablespoons of honey, dark corn syrup or maple syrup as a substitute.

Ingredients:cook

1/2 lb- Ground Meat(beef, turkey, or deer)

1/2 lb- Bacon

1- Onion, Chopped

1/3- Cup Brown Sugar

1/4- Cup Ketchup

1/4- Cup BBQ Sauce

2-TBSP Mustard

2-TBSP Molasses

1- TSP Salt

1/2- TSP Pepper

1/2- TSP Chili Powder

1- Can Pork ‘n Beans

1- Can Butter Beans

1- Can Kidney Beans

Directions:

Fry up the bacon and brown the meat. If you fry the bacon first and use the same pan with the grease to brown the meat, the meat will take on some of the bacon flavor. Break up bacon into bite size pieces. Drain the grease. Put all the remaining ingredients in a casserole dish. And bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or put in a crock pot and cook on low for 3 hours.
