Dirt Cake

dirtDirt Cake

This cake is immensely popular with the boys we teach. We are doing a construction themed VBS this year and I plan on serving it at least once. This recipe, besides being ‘to die for’, is lots of fun. If you need an attractive dessert, make it up in a large, fancy glass bowl. Or use a flower pot and top with artificial flowers and gummy worms. For a men’s Banquet, or get you some toy dump trucks and use it at VBS or a kids party. I made it in a silver bucket and topped it with the gummy worms and a ‘gone fishing’ sign. I made one with a white cake topped with white sandwich cookies, peppermints, red and green worms and Christmas sprinkles for a Christmas themed cake, we called it the “Snow Ball Fight.”

Ingredients:

1 Cake mixpsalm112
.5 cup butter, softened
8 oz cream cheese (Philly brand)
.5 to 1 cup powdered sugar
(2) small packages instant vanilla pudding
3 cups milk
12 oz Cool Whip
20 oz Oreos, crushed very fine (I use the food processor)

Directions:

Mix up and bake cake mix as described on box. Allow to cool. While that is cooking and cooling, in medium bowl mix butter, cream cheese and sugar with a mixer. In a second bowl mix the milk and pudding. Add the whipped topping to the pudding mixture; combine the two mixtures. Crumble up cake. In a glass bowl or flower pot, layer cake and cookie crumbs and filling, ending with crumbs on top. Garnish with  gummy worms and decorations, if you like.
