Hamburger and Potato Casserole

This is an unbelievably easy dish that packs in the flavor. This is the basic recipe that is fine stand alone. I have taken this recipe and tweaked it for different dinners. I have added spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese on top for Italian, taco seasoning and garnished with sour cream and Mexican blend cheese, for Mexican night.  Added Swiss cheese and mushrooms. Smalls likes me to add mixed veggies and cheese on top for a weird version of shepherd’s pie. Pretty mush this casserole is a great base for you to experiment and whip  up something fantastic.

Thicker slices with cheese, milk, and thyme


1.5 lbs Ground Chuck, Deer or Turkey
3 to 5 Potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
1/2 small onion, minced


Sprinkle salt and pepper on the bottom of a 2 quart (or so) casserole dish, and then press in the Ground Chuck, patting down well into the bottom of the dish. I mix ant wet ingredients I have added to the meat. If i add veggies I will layer them between potatoes. Salt and pepper again, and sprinkle with minced onion. Add a layer of potatoes, a little salt/pepper, a layer of potatoes…until dish is full. Dot with butter, cover, and bake at 350 degrees about 1.5 hours.
