Baked French Toast

toastBaked French Toast

This is a fabulous recipe that can be made  the night before and placed in the oven in the morning. My family gets super excited everytime I start making these in the evening. This recipe will serve about six people. Teenagers and kids love this recipe and think they are really getting treated. These are perfect for the busy holidays or New Years Day breakfast.

1 loaf bread sliced into 1 1/2″ thick slices (Challah, Italian, French, Raisin)

1 1/2 cup egg substitute

1 1/4 cup skim milk

1 1/2 cup orange juice

1/2 teaspoon orange zest or cinnamon

1/4 cup.pure maple syrup

Chopped pecans, walnuts

Preheat oven to 350F. In a large non-metal bowl, whip together the “eggs” skim milk, orange juice and optional spices. Marinate bread overnight in the mixture. Spray a large pan with cooking spray. Arrange bread in pan, pour remaining mixture over top of slices. Sprinkle with nuts. Loosely cover pan with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and drizzle with pure maple syrup. Bake uncovered an additional 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fresh orange slices and orange marmalade. Serves about 6 (if you’re lucky)
